Commercial Awnings

I have talked about how retractable sun awnings can improve your home but there is now quite a market for commercial awnings. At first you may think why any company would need a sun awning but looking closer the benefits of a sun awning at commercial premises is obvious.

Commercial AwningsThis primary reason why people want a sun awning for their commercial premises is due to the smoking ban. The smoking ban in the UK has caused an issue for many businesses. Mainly businesses that rely on the general public spending their money within a building. This applies to bingo halls, nightclubs and the number one reason for a commercial awning – the good old pub.

People being forced outside to smoke can create a real issue, especially without any shelter. It is no longer acceptable to even create a building for smokers as it then breaks the law to smoke within. An awning provides some degree of shelter from the sun, rain and other weather for the smokers. Not only this it increases the external space for all customers to go out and enjoy the outdoor weather.

Commercial awnings have been found for years, think of your local green grocer – the florist – often these kind of shops have installed, and have for years, commercial awnings to protect their stock whilst being able to display it outside the shop. These kind of awnings have certainly been around a long time before residential awnings came onto the market.

More and more commercial awnings are popping up at factories and offices. This is simply to give employees who choose to smoke, some kind of shelter from the sun and rain.

If you are considering purchasing a commercial awning and intend to use it for rain shelter then ensure that you have checked with the manufacturer that the awning is capable of withstanding rain. Most awnings will allow water to pool on the fabric if left out in heavy rain or not adjusted correctly – this will result in the awning breaking, and can be quite dangerous for anyone unfortunate to be under the awning at the time.

  2. Interesting how businesses can profit from the smoking ban. I am not sure wether the profits of awning manufacturers companesate for the losses in pubs, but anyhow one man’s meat is another man’s poison…

  3. I did not realize that England was also banning cigarette smoking. I don’t know why, but I thought that it was an American trend.

I have mixed feelings about it. Smoking is terrible for you, but it just seems wrong to go into a pub and not be able to smoke. It seems like a loss of freedom.

  4. We are currently looking into supplying sun awnings ourselves. In the past few years since the smoking ban, many Pubs are offering outside spaces where patrons can take their drink and smoke. The bad British weather has meant that these areas need to be covered, however the law dictates that the structure cannot have 3 or more walls (apparently). this has lead to Pubs building lean tos and Awnings.

I think the awning is perhaps the best and most attractive solution.

  6. This is interesting to know why commercial awnings are applied to buildings- for smoking reason. Is that means smoking inside the building is for those who don’t smoke, as it smoke is equal injurious for smoker and non-smoker around.

  7. Personally I am in favor of the smoking ban. I am a non-smoker, and I hated it when I would go to some restaurant and be trying to eat and the people next to me are spoiling my meal… It didn’t happen all of the time, but it did happen… of course I think that some places, like bars, should allow smoking, so I don’t agree with a total ban…

  8. You’re so right – since the smoking ban – there has been a huge uptake on sun awnings… although, many a pub, this is not saving.

  9. It’s quite strange, now the band has been out for sometime that when going overseas and landing up in hotels where smoking is permited, it seems like a distant memory!

  10. this is what’s so amazing about blogging, and the internet in general, you can find all kinds of useful tips and points of view about everything. It’s a beautiful thing.

  11. I work in a restaurent in Denmark, where there is also a smoking ban and pretty cold. so a lot of companies buy commercial awnings, but they also put sides on them and a heater. This makes a nice smoking room.

  12. I have an awning installed at my office building. We have a big patio area which has lovely views of the surrounding town and if we have guests you take them out there, in the shelter on a nice day and it’s very impressive.

Clients are always knocked off there feet.

  13. A nice solution for summer cafes – no need to use sun glasses or blink, and the general feeling of being in the shade when it is hot makes it quite seasonable.

  14. These things are really very nice. I had one installed and I love how easily they retract and fold out. There are great if don’t want to build a permanent awning onto your home for shade.

  15. Ownings have been around us for quiet a while and they provide not only the shelter but also fine place for amusement to all of us, but it should not be used for smoking as if no smoking areas tend to deliver quiet smoking message such places tends to lure people towards smoking and such bad habits which cause diseases and problem for others.

  16. For years I used a gazebo in my garden in the summer months when I had friends round for a BBQ and a few drinks. But it was pain putting it up every time so I bought a wind-out awning this summer and it was really great. Very quick to wind out and no messing about with steel poles etc that were needed with the gazebo.

  17. I would consider one of these if they are more sturdy than a gazibo, living in the North of Scotland and fairly high up in the hills ours just gets blown about the place every time we erect it. a semi permanent structure like this would be much better.

  18. According to my knowledge the best business that can beneift from awning are open or garden restaurants. Awning can provide a roof with out spending much money and can save a lot dollars. People also like spending time in an open space which is not conjusted.

  19. Interesting how businesses can profit from the smoking ban.But strange as it is, now the band has been out for sometime that when going abroad and landing up in hotels where smoking is permitted, it seems like a distant memory!

  20. These awnings are great – I’ve seen them for years outside shops but didn’t realise you could buy them for private use in your garden. Their size means they are ideal for positioning a large patio set underneath for dining outdoors in the summer when there is a risk of rainfall.

  21. A really excellent idea and definitely worth buying if you have large garden and want to cover your patio area or similar when you are dining outdoors in the summer months. I’ve noticed more and more of these awnings outside pubs and restaurants now that the smoking ban in in place.

  22. We have found that awnings provide not just protection from the weather no matter sun or rain but also bring a splash of colour to both residential and commercial properties. The UK seems to be behind the States and many countries in Europe in taking up the benefits of awnings.

  23. An awning means more attraction, more visits and more sales.
Benefit of awnings and sunshades is their durability. Most awnings will last for a long period of time, around 10 years to be exact. It offer good protection from rain.
